Bamboo is the perfect screening plant. Smaller varieties are suited for planters as well as ground. All bamboo varieties prefer good drainage but well watered and will grow faster if watered over summer.

If you choose a planter it is important to have a watering system for best results. Feed in Spring, Summer and Autumn. Jungle Flora Bamboo sells the optimum fertiliser for container grown plants. Please enquire.

Small Bamboo

3-4m Tall

Perfect bamboo for smaller gardens. It is very easy to hedge and also clips well. Perfect for troughs and pots. 
Despite its name this is NOT a golden variety. It is green.
Cold hardy to -12C

6 -8m Tall

Blue bamboo has attractive 3cm blue canes if grown in the shade. They turn pink if grown in the sun. What I love about this bamboo is the soft and graceful leaves and very blue new culms.
It makes a dense screen and best left unclipped to show off its gracefulness.
A good alternative to Black Bamboo which is an invasive runner.
Light shade. Cold hardy to -5

Bambusa textilis gracilis – Slender Weavers Bamboo

6-8m Tall

Our most popular bamboo for hedging. It can provide screening from 3 – 8m as it is easy to trim to the desired height.
It can be planted in a narrow space by reducing the canes to the desired plant width. (minimum 40cm)
Its upright habit and bushiness make it the perfect screening hedge.
Left alone it will make a bushy hedge or the canes can be pleached by removing the branches. This gives a modern architectural look.
Perfect for containers. Useful for garden stakes.
Very fast growing, reaching screen height in 2-3 years depending on which size you purchase.
Sun or shade. Cold hardy to -7C

Large Bamboo

Bambusa oldhamii – Windbreak Bamboo

10-15m Tall

Tall bamboo. Used on large properties as a wind break or boundary fence. 5-10cm culms.
Bambusa oldhamii is the most effective and popular choice in New Zealand for shelter for farms, horticultural blocks and lifestyle blocks. One grower has used it to stop people stealing his avocado crop.
Once established, this variety becomes a thick impenetrable hedge. 
Canes are perfect for making fences, stakes and garden screens.
Edible shoots.
Sun or shade. Cold hardy to -6

Dendrocalamus latiflorus – Taiwan Giant

20-25m Tall

Giant bamboo. Amazing if you have the space. 10 – 20cm canes.
This is the largest species that grows in NZ. It’s canes and shoots are spectacular. 
Edible shoots. This species is being grown for shoots in NZ. 
Most shooting bamboo sold for edible shoots are runners such as Moso however this variety is one of the best.
Prefers moist conditions but not bog.
Sun or shade. Best grown as a specimen rather than hedge.
